President Atambaev proposes to start compulsory learning of Kyrgyz language since kindergarten and first grade of school.

President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambaev today proposed to start compulsory learning of Kyrgyz language since kindergarten and first grade in school. Every person should speak mother tongue, this is why learning of the Kyrgyz language should start since the first grade of school, President Atambaev said at the plenary session of the Parliament on December 28. "All citizens should speak the state language. Of course, it is hard to learn one more language in the years of discretion, this is why learning of Kyrgyz language should start since kindergartens, first grade of school since 1 September 2012. The Ministry of Education should make all necessary arrangements - to supply clear textbooks for schools," the President underscored. The President said the present Kyrgyz language textbooks are unclear. "I met with one Belgian, who learned the basic Kyrgyz language for 2 weeks. It is necessary to build the culture of learning Kyrgyz language and languages of different people of Kyrgyzstan," he said. The President added despite the country has over 50 universities, the quality of education remains poor. "We fall behind with education reforms," President Atambaevs said.
