Prescott on diet to beat diabetes.

Byline: NIGEL NELSON

HEAVYWEIGHT John Prescott has been ordered to go on a diet and make drastic changes to his life-style after being diagnosed with diabetes.

Doctors say the Deputy Premier, who loves fish and chips and Chinese takeaways, needs to lose at least two stone.

They have told him he also needs to get more sleep as well as giving up snacks and fatty foods.

But if there is no improvement, he could be forced to retire completely from politics.

Workaholic Mr Prescott, 64 this month, had hospital tests after struggling to stay awake at work.

Both his father and sister also have diabetes.

Mr Prescott - nicknamed Two Jags - is renowned for his grumpiness and made headlines when he tried to punch a farm worker who threw an egg at him.

A friend said: "John led a crazy life-style for years, staying up late night after night.

"He always looked so tired on television and the diabetes was why."
