Preliminary report on Southwest Airlines' Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport incident released.


Preliminary findings from research conducted by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) into the overrunning of a runway by a Southwest Airlines aircraft have been released.

The NTSB's analyses of the Boeing 737-300's flight data and voice cockpit recorders have revealed that the aircraft's descent to Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport was 6 degrees, steeper than the 3 degrees normally specified for runway 8 of the airport. As the aircraft was approaching for landing, the ground proximity warning system is shown also to have given commands of 'sink rate' and 'pull up.'

Flight 1455 overran the runway at Burbank airport on 5 March, crashing through an airport fence, colliding with a car and narrowly avoiding a collision with a gas station. No one was seriously hurt in the incident, though 15 people suffered minor injuries, including the pilot.
