Pre-season silliness at an all-time high; PICK OF THE DAY.

Live football ESPN, 2.45pm NOSTALGIC football fans often reminisce about the days when the FA Cup final was the only match shown on television all year and news of England's World Cup win in 1966 was transmitted across the country via a series of bonfires lit on hills, writes James Milton.

Nowadays we're used to televised pre-season friendlies such as today's clash between an Indonesia 11 and Arsenal.

ESPN's coverage offers Gunners fans a first glimpse of their new attacking trio of Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain, which should be very exciting. What's that? None of those players have actually signed for Arsenal? Oh, I get it - I've been hoodwinked by the kind of transfer speculation that the papers use to fill their pages during the silly season.

I'm fed up with the silly season.

It's not even silly, it's just annoying.

At least it's not long now until the silly season is replaced by the actual season and the serious business of biting fellow professionals, kicking 17-year-old ballboys and booing your own club's manager. Thank goodness.
