Praise for hospital; Mailbag.

TOO often I read newspapers and see sad stories about the NHS service around the country and it is depressing to read.

I visited Huddersfield HRI's accident and emergency department on May 10 because I had chest pains and was made to stay overnight. The treatment from the nursing staff was excellent on the A and E ward.

I was allowed to watch the rugby league match on BBC (St Helens v Catalans) and later that evening at 10.30 I was allowed to watch Match of the Day.

But what made my stay more memorable was on the day of my departure on May 11 one of the nurses came to my bedside and asked "Do you fancy something spicy?" to which I raised my eyebrows.

Then she produced the menu for lunch and showed me the Caribbean dishes that are cooked at HRI. I thought it was a wind-up.

I ordered saltfish and ackee with rice and waited for a Jeremy Beadle lookalike to turn up, but no, within minutes my meal appeared and tasted delicious.

Just the way I have it at home. So if any readers have any family or friends at HRI who like Caribbean food, remember it is available right there and it tastes very nice.

Thank you to all the staff on the A and E ward who looked after me and the wonderful chef.
