Praise for QE.

Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt has praised a Tyneside hospital for hitting targets surrounding patient waiting times.

The Queen Elizabeth, in Gateshead, is one of 18 hospitals to hit the Government target of 18 weeks for patients needing to be admitted for treatment.

Mrs Hewitt commended the hospital when responding to Gateshead East and Washington West Labour MP, Sharon Hodgson, during health questions in the House of Commons. She told Mrs Hodgson: "I congratulate the staff at that Gateshead hospital and others.

"Eighteen hospitals will expect to achieve that 18-week target one year ahead of time by the end of this year. That is the kind of improvement we are seeing, thanks to NHS staff."
