Practical and powerful.

FUNKY cabin, falling roofline, wraparound rear windscreen and bladed sides - all defining features of the latest Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer.

There's no doubt, Vauxhall pulled off a masterstroke of design with its Ellesmere Port-built model.

But the cutting-edge thoroughbred has now become even more of a shooting star thanks to the arrival of a BiTurbo model, making it the most powerful estate in its class.

We're talking 195PS of punch, a top-speed in excess of 135mph and a 0-60mph figure of 8.2 seconds from the Sports Tourer's 2.0-litre diesel engine.

But this doesn't compromise economy, with CO2 emissions of 134g/km and a combined fuel average of 55.4mpg, aided in both cases by Start/Stop technology.

Twin turbo technology is rare in this area of the car market and the Astra uses a sequential system, with the smaller turbo accelerating quickly at lower speeds to eliminate lag. The upshot is a car with serious wallop and a planted, positive feel.

The BiTurbo also benefits from the styling revamp across the Astra range, including a revised front grille, new front indicators and fog lamps and refreshed rear-panel styling.

Unique features to BiTurbo include 18in alloy wheels, twin rear exhausts and exterior styling pack.

Thankfully the Sport Tourer's lean lines haven't compromised space, the load capacity proving outstanding.

There are some smart features too, like the FlexFold operation which allows each section of the 60/40 split-rear seats to drop flat at the touch of a button in the luggage bay wall.

Then there's the two-touch boot cover - a tap of the fingers to slide it upwards, another to retract it completely into a cassette.

There's also a useful choice when it comes to trim grades, labelled Design, Tech Line, Sri and Elite in addition to the BiTurbo SE - all with stuff like ESP, six airbags, air-con, front electric windows and daytime running lights as standard.

And buyers also have a choice of seven engines, with prices starting from PS16,295 for the 100PS 1.4i Design petrol model.
