Powys team beats others from UK for energy saving.

A TEAM from Llandrindod has beaten 14 other groups from across the UK in a competition to save the most energy.

The team from Abbeycwmhir, Powys, collected their prize in Brussels after being UK winners of the European Energy Neighbourhoods competition.

The competition, run in the UK by local sustainable energy charity Severn Wye Energy Agency, invites teams of households across Europe to compete against one another to see which can save the most energy.

The UK team was headed up by the Berriman family and collectively made a saving of almost 20%, compared to their energy consumption the previous year.

For four months, the competition participants were encouraged to read their energy meters each week and follow some simple energy saving tips.

Asked how the team had made its savings team co-ordinator Diana Berriman said: "It's just a case of applying the usual top tips - not leaving items on standby mode, turning off the lights, using the tumble drier less, only using the immersion heater when it is needed.

"It's all about being consistent, avoiding wasted energy and keeping an eye on what is being used."

The Llandrindod team was joined at the award ceremony in Brussels by 15 other teams from countries across Europe that had taken part in the Energy Neighbourhood competition.
