Powell opens new gym for hard trainers in Wrexham.

WALES rugby union ace Andy Powell was in North Wales this week to launch the new Inspire Performance Centre gym.

The Inspire Performance Centre (IPC), in Gwersyllt near Wrexham, is the brainchild and the realisation of a long-held ambition for Jon Aby, former director of North Wales rugby.

It offers elite coaching for all fitness levels including mixed martial arts and boxing as well as training for people involved in sports such as rugby and football.

Back row Powell plans to use the gym to work on, among other things, his tackling and breakdown skills.

Powell said: "It looks a great set-up and I'm hoping to come down in the next few weeks and use it.

"I can use the centre to work on the technical side of things such as tackling and the breakdown area, working on making the movements quickly to get on the ball, win the ball and create space."

Aby said: "It's a strength and conditioning gym, and we've also got a section for mixed martial arts section - which if you believe what the press says is the biggest-growing in the world.

"We hold wrestling classes, jujitsu classes, boxing classes, Olympic lifting coaching, and there's a section for people playing sports like rugby or football to do conditioning and strength training."

Aby said the gym filled a long-standing need in the area, saying: "It's not a lifestyle gym - the key aspect of it is quality of coaching. It's something I've wanted to do for several years and something which has been lacking in the Wrexham area."

IPC, on the Mold Road Trading Estate, are offering the first gym or coaching session for free.
