Poulter 'gobsmacked' by young Rory MvIlroy's first Major win.

London, July 11 (ANI): British golfer Ian Poulter has revealed that he was "gobsmacked" by Rory McIlroy's feat in winning his first Major at just 22.

That is because at the same age, Poulter was still selling Mars bars in his local pro shop!

Poulter, 35, was among the first players to congratulate McIlroy on his US Open triumph last month, as they linked up for a corporate event the following morning.nd as McIlroy proudly displayed the trophy, Poulter could not help thinking back to his own early days as an assistant pro and golf shop manager at Leighton Buzzard.

The Sun quoted him, as saying: "I stood there watching Rory with that trophy and I was absolutely gobsmacked, because I kept thinking about how young and inexperienced he is.

"When I was 22 I was still selling golf balls and Mars bars in the pro shop, dreaming about the day I would play in my first Major.

"For Rory to have won one already is an incredible achievement. But I suppose we shouldn't be surprised.

"We've known all along what a fantastic talent he is and you could see his temperament was terrific as well by the way he reacted when he made his Ryder Cup debut last year.

McIlroy is the bookies' favourite to win The Open, which starts at Royal St George's in Sandwich on Thursday. (ANI)
