HARRY Potter author JK Rowling has admitted one of the most evil characters from her best-selling books was based on a real teacher she "disliked intensely".

Rowling has revealed the history of some of her characters on her Pottermore website.

She said that Dolores Umbridge - a teacher at Hogwarts played in the films by actress Imelda Staunton - was inspired by someone from her childhood.

Rowling described Umbridge as "one of the characters I feel the purest dislike for".

Talking about the real person who inspired the character, she added: "The woman in question returned my antipathy with interest.

"Why we took against each other so instantly, heartily and irrationally, I honestly cannot say."
