POSTSCRIPT: Next issue, we'll be publishing our Benchmark Report on Sales Compensation. An early look at the data we've collected suggests that the report will help answer a good many tough questions that software companies of all sizes have been asking. (We'll also discuss the findings of this new report as part of a day-long session on sales management topics at OpCon East, September 13. We're sensitive about the number of survey questionnaires we've asked our readers to fill out this year, but there's one more major report that's due before we can all take a little time off. That's an update of our Contracts Survey, which originally appeared almost three years ago. At that time, we collected some of the industry's first statistical data about reseller contracts, royalty rates, and OEM deals. We're ready to take a fresh look at these topics--perhaps with two different reports, one on reseller contracts and the other on licensing terms--but first weld like to invite our readers to suggest contract-related questions that the survey should cover.

Ideally, we'd like questions that are as specific as possible (e.g., don't just request site licensing information; instead, you might ask us to compile data on how software companies calculate site license prices). But we're also receptive to more open-ended questions, because often these lead to unexpected insights and new ways of thinking about the problem. If you've got some ideas, drop us a note or send us a fax (617/924-7288) sometime before mid-September and we'll try to incorporate your questions into the next survey. Thanks.
