At the Newcastle Fertility Centre, would-be parents can face a wait of up to five years, the longest in the UK.
At the Centre for Assisted Reproduction, based at Gateshead's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, couples can expect to wait up to three years.
In the south, however, there is virtually no wait at all.
The University College Hospital London has no waiting time, while at the Oxford Fertility Unit, the wait is just two to three weeks.
