Post-punk outfit are a well-oiled machine; NEWCASTLE-BASED DUO MASSA CONFUSA CHAT TO SARAH JEFFERY ABOUT THEIR NEW SINGLE AND FORTHCOMING ALBUM.
ELECTRONIC post-punk duo Massa Confusa are celebrating the release of their third single from their forthcoming new album.
The Newcastle-based band launched Descension at a special showcase at The Northumberland Arms in Newcastle last Friday and were joined on stage by Leeds slacker popsters Syslak, gameboy punk enthusiast Euan Lynn, and Newcastle emo trio ThreadBear.
The single features Jackie Purver of Retriever and is the follow up to Dark World, which was released as part of Massa Confusa Presents Compilation: Vol 2, and Conditioned, which featured on NARC's 10th anniversary compilation. All three singles will feature on Massa Confusa's next album, Two Man-Machine, due to be released in November and the duo also plan to release their fourth single, 27, on September 10. The duo - guitarist/vocalist/programmer Ally Morton and bassist Matt O'Brien - are one of the hardest-working in the North East as not only do they write and record their own material, they also host monthly gigs in Newcastle and Durham under the moniker Massa Confusa Presents, giving different acts a platform to showcase material, as well as running their own record label Clarty Cat.
In addition, Ally runs his own recording project, Five Pence Game, where he invites a range of bands and artists to write and record tracks with him.
He said: "I really enjoy working with different artists and, under my project Five Pence Game, I have released two EPs to date, Loratadine and Cetirizine, back in 2014, and I'm now working on a 15-track album, but it's in the very early stages.
"I'm currently working with Jackie Purver of Retriever, so that's how Descension came about as I knew she was perfect for the track, but I'm also collaborating with Bea Garcia from Twist Helix, Kate Edwards, Faithful Johannes from Outside Your House and Tom Hollingworth, to name a few."
Ally initially started as a solo project, releasing two EPs - Massa Confusa and Goodnight Little X before Matt joined in 2012 to officially make it a collaborative unit.
In July 2013 they performed their first gig and released EP3 which was the first release to feature Matt on recording; and in December 2013 they released their 4th, Obsessive Computive Disorder at a show with We Are Knuckle Dragger, Cauls and Vasquez.
