Post Office set to be stamped out; CONCERN AS BRANCH'S POSTMASTER RESIGNS AND SHUTS SHOP.

A POST Office in North Shields is to close following the resignation of the postmaster.

The Preston Grange branch, near the Morrisons supermarket at the Collingwood Centre, will close its doors on January 13.

The Post Office says it is looking into ways of keeping a service in the community and is urging anyone interested in running a post office to contact them.

A spokesperson said: "Following the resignation of the postmaster and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use, Preston Grange Post Office will temporarily close on Saturday, January 13, at 12.30pm.

"We know how important Post Office services are to people in North Shields and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may cause.

"Any customers wishing to access Post Office services may do so from any Post Office branch, including The Grange Post Office, 47 Blandford Road, or Nile Street Post Office, 12-12a Nile Street.

"We would like to assure customers that we are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community."

Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell said the news was a cause for concern.

He added: "I have been in touch with the Post Office expressing concern about this and I have been reassured they are doing everything they can to find an alternative premises or provide the service in some form.

In November, McColl's confirmed the shop was going to close as well as the Post Office inside the premises.

However the Post Office is exploring options to reinstate a service in Whitley Bay too.
