Post Office back after ten years.

POST Office services have returned to Handbridge after an absence of more than 10 years.

The post office closed in 2008 along with others in Watergate Street and Brook Lane, Newton.

But just before Christmas a post office opened within Martin's newsagents - soon to be known as McColls - at 1 Queens Park Road.

It follows recent news the main city centre post office in St John Street is closing, with services relocated within the nearby WHSmith.

Adam Williams, of the Post Office, said: "Handbridge was a local style branch with a low-screened, open-plan service point integrated into the retail counter. Customers could carry out a wide range of Post Office transactions.

"The new service will offer long opening hours, with the post office opening hours in line with the retail business."

Among the range of facilities available are postal services, Post Office card account services, cash deposits and withdrawals via chip and pin, postal orders, moneygrams, electronic bill payments, e-top ups for mobile phones and the pre-ordering of travel money.

Chester MP Chris Matheson is delighted Post Office services are now available in the community once again but sounds a note of caution.

He said: "I welcome this news for Handbridge because I passionately believe that Post Office and banking services are integral for maintaining healthy high streets.

"That's why I hope that the opening of this service is not used as evidence to support proposals to replace the crown post office on St John Street with counter services in WH Smith on Eastgate Street. I believe Chester city centre needs a crown post office, so I am still campaigning against these proposals."
