Portugal : Public procurement of more contemporary works of art "is another way of promoting culture".
The Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, stated that 2019 "will be the year in which the State will return to acquiring contemporary art in order to enrich its collection", with the aim of promoting the national culture.
These statements were made at the inauguration of Arcolisboa, in Cordoaria Nacional, where the exhibition dedicated to contemporary art will run until May 19, with 71 galleries from 17 countries. Adding that "it is a responsibility and duty of the public authorities to promote contemporary art", the Prime Minister recalled that in 2018 he had already announced that he would make a 300,000 fund for the purchase of works of art.
Thus, this week the Finance and Culture Governance areas have designated the first jury of acquisition of the pieces so that the State "will once again enrich the art collection that is produced on a day-to-day basis, making it decentralized, and that it be democratized and accessible to all citizens, "said Antonio Costa.
"This is another way of promoting culture," said the Prime Minister, recalling other initiatives of the Government in the field of contemporary art, such as the holding of exhibitions at the Sao Bento Palace, the acquisition of six works by Vieira da Silva, now deposited in the Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Museum, and with the maintenance of the Miro Collection, which "will soon be permanently in Serralves", he added.
Antonio Costa - who was accompanied by the Minister of Culture, Graca Fonseca concluded by highlighting the creation of a focus on this year's edition of Arcolisboa in Africa, given the strong connection between this continent and Portugal. The new special section Africa in Focus will feature six galleries at Arcolisboa 2019.
