Portugal : Lines of Towers classified as national heritage.
The Council of Ministers approved the Decree that classifies the Lines of Towers as a national monument. The Torres Lines are the complex of forts and military roads built to defend Lisbon from the French invasions in the early nineteenth century.
The decree classifies as a national monument the first and second lines of defense built north of Lisbon during the Peninsular War, reinforcing "a long process of physical preservation of the material and immaterial memory of this defensive system, recognizing, among other criteria, the genius of the respective creator and the interest as a remarkable testimony of historical experiences or facts ".
We classified 114 structures that are still preserved, not being classified those that are very degraded or destroyed, which are about 15.
The Torres Lines is a defensive system of unusual size and historical impact, nationally and internationally, which was built under the guidance of the English general Wellington, commander of the Luso-British troops during the French invasion, to defend Lisbon from the Napoleonic forces between 1807 and 1814, during the Peninsular War.
The Torres Lines receive around 10 thousand visitors per year.
