Port Talbot resident finds freedom after stoma surgery; ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE.

WHEN Helen, from Port Talbot, was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, she not only had to mentally prepare for surgery, but also had to come to terms with the prospect of living with a stoma. Her shock at having a serious health condition was paired with her fear of having her full and busy life restricted.

She initially struggled to adjust to living as an ostomate. However, this all changed when she discovered a different kind of colostomy pouch which was flushable, so it could be flushed away in the toilet.

The way her new pouch works gives Helen freedom and allows her to indulge her love of travelling.

Helen said: "With a colostomy, you never know when it's going to go or what's going to happen. You go out and you wonder, is it going to be all right? And that worry is constantly in your mind.

"Travelling was my big passion, but I couldn't even think about going away with my old pouches. Then I went to an open day and met the inventor of the flushable pouch.

"Once you get the hang of it, they make life simpler. With the flushables, you can carry on your life as you want to, more discreetly and more confidently."

Almost one in every 500 people in the UK is living with a stoma. Around 13,000 new stomas are formed each year, and this can affect people of all ages, for different reasons, including cancer, bowel disease, injury or genetics.

Coming to terms with living with a colostomy can be extremely difficult to deal with and many people say they feel a loss of confidence and freedom to live their lives how they want to.

But it doesn't have to be that way! Wearing a stoma pouch shouldn't restrict your ability to live life to the full, and finding the right pouch to suit your lifestyle and needs can mean the difference between struggling and not struggling.

Aura Flushable with Manuka honey is a unique flushable pouch. For many colostomates, using Aura Flushable can be life-changing. Proven not to block domestic pumping stations* the inner liner and flange can be flushed in domestic toilets. As well as discreet and convenient disposal, the inclusion of medical-grade Manuka honey to the flange may help to promote healthy skin around the stoma.
