Porsching up prices.

Byline: Richard Hammond

IT must be very tempting when you make a car as good as the Porsche 911 Turbo to just leave it be and not bother fiddling with it. But Porsche has come up with a new Turbo.

The big changes start with the engine. The new 3.8-litre engine now has direct injection like all the 911 engines and has twin turbos with variable turbine geometry (a first for a petrol engine, according to Porsche). And 500bhp.

Did the old one need to be faster? Probably not, since it would do nearly 200mph and had 473bhp. But, on the other hand, since the new engine is more economical - it can do an amazing 24.8mpg - there's no harm in having a bit more poke. The numbers that matter are a top speed of 194mph and 0-62mph in 3.4sec.

A rather more frightening number is the price: pounds 101,823 for the coupe and pounds 109,048 for the convertible.
