Pope spindle is acquired by Setco.
The spindle product line of Pope Corp. (Haverhill, Mass.), including the former Spindle Machine & Service company, has been purchased by Setco (Cincinnati, Ohio), the manufacturer and rebuilder of spindles and slides. The Pope operation had been part of bearings producer Barden Corp. (Danbury, Conn.), an affiliate of FAG (Schweinfurt, Germany).Pope produces a number of precision-spindle lines and operates service centers in several locations, including Taylor, Mich., and Cosa Mesa, Calif.
According to Setco president John Garratt, "Pope engineering and new product manufacturing will be incorporated into the Setco corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio."
The move will be another example of consolidation by Setco. Last year Setco closed the Hutchinson, Kans., plant that had produced Master-brand spindles, acquired in 1996, and moved the line into its Cincinnati site.
Other Setco brands include Whitnon, acquired in 1994 from GMN (Nuernberg, Germany).
