Pope Francis of a footsie.

POPE Francis washes and kisses the feet of an inmate at a juvenile detention centre yesterday in the Maundy Thursday ritual that he has celebrated for years as an archbishop.

The Mass was held in the Casal del Marmo facility in Rome, where 46 young men and women - many gypsies and North African migrants - are detained. Officials revealed that the 12 selected for the rite were not necessarily Catholic.

Vatican Radio said the Pope told the detainees Jesus washed the feet of his disciples in a gesture of service. He said: "The Lord was the most important, but he washed the feet of others."
