Pope Benedict Calls For Religious Freedom and Peace in the Middle East.

Vatican City -- PNN -- Pope Benedict XVI celebrated mass at the conclusion of the synod of bishops on the Middle East in St. Peter's Basilica on Sunday and called for greater religious freedom in the region. At the mass in St. Peter's Basilica on Sunday the Pope Benedict said that, "One must never resign oneself to the lack of peace. Peace is possible. Peace is urgent. Peace is an indispensable condition for a life worthy of the human person and of society. Peace is also the best remedy to avoid immigration from the Middle East."The Pope also said that the Middle East would benefit from greater religious freedoms and supported a call by the synod participants for Muslims and Christians to open an "urgent and useful" dialogue on the issue. In the synod of Bishops' final statement to the media on Saturday, they demanded that Israel accept the U.N. resolutions calling for an end to the occupation of Palestinian land, and told the press that Israel should not use the Bible to justify injustices against the Palestinian people or their land. The bishops also condemned terrorism and anti-Semitism, but they laid much of the blame for the conflict on Israel. They listed the occupation, separation barrier in the West Bank, Israeli checkpoints in Palestinian territory, political prisoners, home demolitions and the disruption of Palestinian socio-economic life as factors in perpetuating the conflict. Yigal Palmor, Israeli Foreign Minister spokesman, criticized the comments about the use of Biblical justifications for the land, saying, "This has never been a policy of any government in Israel so this position sounds particularity hollow. Let he who has never sinned cast the first stone."
