TRADE SECRETS

| Choose a 'pop' colour. It doesn't have to be soft green, like we've chosen. Pale blue, mauve or teal would be lovely too. Use it to pull the room together with curtains, bath linen and accessories. Keep everything else neutral for chic simplicity.

| Don't be afraid of wallpaper in the bathroom. As long as the room is reasonably sized and well ventilated (not too steamy), wallpaper can last very well on bathroom walls.

| Turn any bath into something more special by replacing the taps for more ornate ones. Don't feel you have to get a whole new bath to update your bathroom - as lovely as classic roll-tops are, it can be an expensive upgrade.

| Search secondhand shops and jumble sales for single dining chairs to use in the bathroom. Chairs are expensive, even pre-owned, but you can get very good deals on single antique chairs because most people want to buy them in pairs or sets.

| Get ready-made curtains, they're much cheaper than bespoke but hard to find if you have high ceilings and need a long drop. Most high street shops only go up to 230cm. For longer ones you can buy off-the-shelf try Ikea, the only place where we've found them extending to 300cm.

| Consider painting floorboards white for that French chateau, shabby chic look. But be warned - they take some cleaning. If you can, go for a white, bathroom-ready parquet floor instead which is much easier to zip over with a mop.
