Pop Culture Classroom Opens Doors for Colorado Kids to Explore World of Comics, Games, and Movies Through Educational Spring Break and Summer Camps.
Beginning in March 2018, and continuing this summer, Pop Culture Classroom will host several educational camps for kids ages 8-14. With a variety of focus areas, including anime, board games, comic books, and sci-fi, camp participants will work with experienced educators and professional artists to dive deep into the world of pop art.
"What could be cooler than spending a week learning to make your own board game, learning to write and draw your own comic book, or designing your own costume for Comic Con?" stated Illya Kowalchuk, director of education for Pop Culture Classroom. "During each camp, kids will participate in one-of-a-kind learning experiences surrounding their interests in comics, movies, video games, and more. Our kids have a great time harnessing their creativity around their existing interests, and parents will appreciate that their kids are participating in an educational camp without even knowing it."
Pop Culture Classroom was founded in 2010 and is a charitable organization that educates through alternative approaches to literacy, learning, and character development. The organization creates programs for underserved students, schools and communities via comic books, graphic novels, and related media. Pop Culture Classroom is the organizer and producer of Denver Comic Con, Denver's premiere pop-culture fan experience, and one of the most attended pop culture conventions in America, covering the worlds of comic books, film, and related media.
"As the teachers, artists, writers, parents, and all-around pop culture activists that created Pop Culture Classroom, each of us has personal experience with the transformational power of comics and other pop culture media," continued Kowalchuk. "We believe that literacy, creativity and creative thinking are essential abilities for our children as they prepare to navigate both the successes and challenges of life, and that pop culture can be an important tool to achieve these goals."
Registration is now open for Pop Culture Classroom's spring break and summer camps in Denver. Camps include "Manga Madness," "Camp Comic Con," "Sci-Fi Camp," "Game On!" and "Comic Book Camp." Spring break camps begin March 26 and run through March 30 and summer camps run June 11 through July 27. Full day programming is offered during each week-long session.
