Poor people in Uzbekistan make 5 million -- Senate Speaker.

The number of poor people in Uzbekistan makes 5 million people, Senate Speaker Tanzila Narbaeva said at seminar for region vice governors, district governors and mayors at the Public Administration Academy on January 27.

"The President has raised the poverty issue not for nothing, since the country has such problem. I used to work in the social sphere myself, but we were prohibited to talk about poverty. We called them low-income families," she said.

"If the problem is discussed openly, respective measures need to be taken," the Speaker said.

"Each system should work properly," the Speaker said and suggested to develop entrepreneurship locally, reports.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in his recent state of the nation address said the poverty rate in the country makes around 12%-15%.
