Poll security: Senate summons top officials.
Senator from Kabul Khaliqdad Balaghi claimed security on highways had worsened recently, and the officials would be asked to explain factors behind the current state of security.
Law and order was going from bad to worse because most officials were busy canvassing for their political mentors, alleged Abdul Hanan Haqwayoon, an MP from southeastern Paktia province.
"The officials should work in coordination to ensure satisfactory security as elections are still far away. They should focus on their duties rather than on other issues," he remarked.
Another legislator, Syed Farrukh Shah, recalled a recent deadly clash in the Qasar district of Faryab province. He claimed the firefight had happened because of lack of security personnel there."Holding elections will be an impossible task if security of the district isn't tightened."
Senate Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar said upper house commission heads had decided to summon security officials to explain why security across the entire country continued to worsen.
He added the officials would be asked about security measures for the presidential and provincial council elections, scheduled to be held in April 2014.
