Police say shooting suspect stabbed during February fight; City man still being sought is facing multiple charges.
Byline: Scott J. CroteauWORCESTER - A man accused of shooting a 21-year-old city man outside a Main Street social club early Friday morning was stabbed in a restaurant fight on Chandler Street on Feb. 27, according to court records on file in Central District Court.
Marcelino Santiago Celeste, 32, of 51 Wellington St., was still at large yesterday evening, and is facing charges of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Police have issued an arrest warrant for him.
The restaurant fight and the shooting Friday outside the Jose Pagan Social Club at 799 Main St. appear to be unrelated, but police are investigating if there was any connection.
Authorities said the shooting around 12:30 a.m. Friday stemmed from a prior beef between the 21-year-old victim and Mr. Celeste. The victim was shot in the lower leg, and five people were arrested after the incident. He was listed in stable condition Friday, but no further information was available on his condition last night.
Two people, one a friend of the victim, fired shots during the fight. A friend of the victim, Heriberto Bauza, 37, of Sutton, was arraigned Friday in Central District Court on firearms charges for allegedly pulling a gun and firing a shot into the air.
Police said Mr. Celeste allegedly fired at least two shots from a 9 mm handgun outside the club, hitting the victim once in the left leg. He allegedly passed the gun to a friend and fled.
The three city men - Luis Skarrett, 31; Luis Ocasio, 27; and Luis Torres, 34 - were also arraigned Friday in Central District Court on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Mr. Skarrett's brother, Alison Skarrett, 21, of Spencer, was arrested on the same charges after further investigation, Lt. Johnson said
Police continue to investigate the Feb. 27 fight inside the El Buen Sabor restaurant at 59 Chandler St. that left a 27-year-old man in critical condition after he was struck in the head with a chair. The 27-year-old remains in critical condition in a city hospital.
During the melee, Mr. Celeste was stabbed in the back, according to a search warrant affidavit on file in Central District Court. Detective Capt. Edward J. McGinn Jr. said yesterday that police believe the 27-year-old man was hit with the chair after Mr. Celeste was stabbed.
Police are investigating who stabbed Mr. Celeste and who hit the other man over the head with the chair. Detective Lt. James J. Johnson said police continue to investigate who was involved in the fight and Mr. Celeste's role.
"We're still looking to see what his involvement was in the fight, if any," Lt. Johnson said. "He was a victim of a stabbing during the fight."
