Police probe mystery man's call to J Dando.

POLICE are hunting a "a polite and charming man" who made a strange phone call to a woman called J Dando.

The mystery caller quizzed the woman, who is no relation to the murdered TV presenter, for 10 minutes with questions about the popular star, police said yesterday.

The call was made four months before Jill Dando was killed with a shot to the head on her own doorstep. Police believe it may be the same man who posed as her brother in an attempt to change her gas, water and electricity bills to his name in February last year.

Detective Chief Inspector Hamish Campbell, who is leading the investigation into the murder on April 26 last year, revealed the lead at a Press conference at New Scotland Yard.

He said Jill's namesake received the lengthy call from a man in December 1998.

Mr Campbell said the lead came to light when police quizzed everyone in the country called Dando.

In last night's Crimewatch about the programme's former presenter, police revealed three new witnesses who saw a sinister man in a trilby hat and baggy blue suit lurking around Jill's house in Fulham, London.
