Amazing dashcam footage show a meteor streak through the sky before it hurtled towards the ground.

The astonishing video was filmed from a police car as an officer drove through a rural area in the early hours.

Sergeant Michael Virga told how he was cruising at just after 3am on a road in Hamilton township in South Jersey when something caught his eye.

"It kind of took me by surprise," Sgt. Virga "I just saw a little blip -- it lit up the entire sky like a lime green streak."

Sgt. Virga wasn't sure if he captured the amazing spectacle on his dashcam until he checked it later.

Officials at the The American Meteor Society confirmed that the fireball was a meteor. It said it had received multiple reports about the sighting.

The group said the meteor was a bolide, which is a large bright meteor that explodes in the atmosphere.

It came after almost 70 people reported seeing a fireball hurtling though the sky over the mid-Atlantic just over a week ago, reports said.
