Police chiefs with spotted pasts take top jobs in EGM.

ySTANBUL (CyHAN)- As part of extensive shuffling in the Security General Directorate (EGM), police chief C.B., who formerly served in the Balykesir provincial traffic police department, was appointed to head Department A -- in charge of fighting extreme leftist terrorist organizations and following developments in Syria.

The appointment comes after a number of police chiefs whose licenses had been suspended over abuse of power were appointed to critical positions. Another police chief, M.G., who was suspended over illegal wiretapping carried out on behalf of one of his friends, was appointed as the chief of the EGM's strategy department after a change in regulation made it possible for him to return to work.

According to previous regulation, officers who had faced administrative sanctions were barred from returning to jobs in the general directorate. The daily HE-rriyet reported that the critical appointments took place after Engin Dinc was promoted to the top job in the Department of Intelligence (yDB) in April. Dinc used Erhan Tuncel, who was tried on charges of involvement in the murder of Turkish Armenian journalist Hrant Dink and acquitted, as an informant during his term as the chief of intelligence in Trabzon province.

Dinc also appointed police chief y.G. to a high-level post in the institution as the head of the counter-espionage department. y.G. was suspended for abuse of authority after he spied on a friend's girlfriend eight years ago. In the last five months, yDB chiefs of 20 provinces, including ystanbul, Ankara, yzmir, Adana, Trabzon and Kayseri have been replaced.
