Police appeal for sex attacker.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a serious sexual assault in Tyneside.

A 29-year-old woman was walking along Elysium Lane, in Bensham, Gateshead, when she was grabbed by a man at 10pm on Wednesday.

He sexually assaulted her and fled after a struggle that left the woman with bruising.

The offender is described as having olive-coloured skin, in his mid-30s and about 5ft 7in.

He also had a distinctive flat nose and lips.

The woman said he was wearing dark blue or black jeans and a darkcoloured waterproof pullover jacket.

Northumbria Police are keen to speak to two men who passed the victim shortly before the assault and may have seen the offender in the area.

Det Sgt Dave Kay, of Gateshead CID, said: "This was a horrific ordeal for the woman involved and although she wasn't badly injured, she has been left shaken.

"We are keen to trace the two men who passed her shortly before the offence.

"We would urge these two men to please come forward."
