Polar bear twins Gregor and Aleut have enjoyed the first rays of spring sunshine on their first public outing at the Nuremberg zoo.

The zookeepers allowed bear mother Vera and her newborns Gregor and Aleut some rest before presenting the cuddly cubs to the visitors at the southern German zoo.

With the recent sunshine and warm weather, the careful mother checked the safety of the outdoor enclosure first, before taking her cubs for a stroll and their first swim.

Zoo director, Dag Encke, called the sunny outing a success: "The little ones are doing fine. They are getting tired now, they have been in the open enclosure for three hours already and are doing very well."

Being able to watch a polar bear mother raising her young is a first experience for visitors to the Nuremberg zoo as the zoo now has a special enclosure for just this.
