Poets clash.

Byline: Victor D. Infante

COLUMN: TEN THINGS TO DO

It's verse versus verse as eight local poets battle to decide which four of them will represent Worcester at the 2009 National Poetry Slam Finals in West Palm Beach, Fla., and unlike most previous years, there's a whole new crop of contenders in the field. The only veteran of past Worcester teams is Trevor Byrne-Smith, who's joined by former youth poetry slam team competitor Danny Balel, Worcester Poets Asylum hosts Dave Keali'I (pictured) and Liz Heath; and up-and-comers "Cowboy" Matt Hopewell, Danielle Carriveau, Aslan King and Mckendy Fils-Aime. It's looking like a brand-new Worcester Poetry slam team, and that's pretty exciting. The Worcester Poetry Slam Team Finals will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Jumpin' Juice & Java, 335 Chandler St., Worcester. Free, but the Poets' Asylum still needs to raise $1,313 to cover expenses, according to its Web site, so throw some money in the hat.
