Playing the field; Give your wardrobe a workout with American athletics-inspired looks. Katie Wright tracks the sport luxe trend.

WITH a Chanel 'gym' just opened in swanky New York department store Bergdorf Goodman (sort of - you can't actually workout there) and Alexander Wang's collection touching down in H&M this month, it's official: sport has never been more stylish.

American fashion wunderkind Wang has always infused his designs with track and field touches, and his high street collaboration is no exception.

Because he's so on trend, a stampede and lightening-fast sell-out is expected when the collection, with accessories starting from PS7.99 for key rings and crop tops at PS29.99, hits stores on November 6. But you can already score plenty of winning athletics-inspired pieces in the shops right now.

JACKET IN TRADITIONALLY awarded to US college sport stars, letterman jackets (usually wool with leather sleeves) have more than made it into the mainstream. Also called bomber or varsity jackets, they're a cool alternative to a biker during this not-quite-winteryet weather. Not just for the outdoors, take a leaf out of Mary Berry's book and wear a fitted silk or lace bomber as you would a blazer. A bright hue really pops when layered over a fine rollneck H&M PS29.99 in dove grey or camel.

By night, take it up a notch in a sequin or brocade jacket, paired with black tapered trousers and stilettos.

JOGGERS ON HAVING graduated from the lazy-day loungewear category, jogging bottoms have had an upmarket makeover in recent seasons. Like varsity jackets, large PS220, (johnlewis.

opt for trackpants in satin or silk fabrics, even pinstripe, for day, and make sure they're cuffed at the hems. In fact, steer clear of sweatshirt fabric and you can get away with wearing them to work.

leather bag, DON'T FORGET YOUR KIT BAG WHETHER you're kitted out in sporty separates or not, a sleek kit bag is a chic goes-withalmost-everything accessory for autumn, especially in minimalist shapes and monochrome.

Discover the joy of handsfree with a backpack. Cast aside any school bag associations by choosing soft leather with luxe metal hardware finishes.

GET A SWEAT ON THE sweatshirt is the comfy-cool way to join the sports luxe squad.

A classic grey marl sweatshirt, worn with jeans and flats remains a weekend winner, but souped-up sweaters take it to the next level - still comfortable, but dressy enough for the office. Look for sequin or paillette embellishments in graphic shapes.

verity rucksack, Sweatshirts work after dark too. A slim-fit jewel-encrusted top paired with a swishy full skirt is a feminine way to work the trend.

FANCY FOOTWEAR KEY to nailing the luxe element of this trend is your choice of footwear. Specifically: no trainers allowed. Even ballet flats can look a little too casual.

With joggers, sharp-toed two-part heels (where the front and back are separated, as opposed to court shoes) and mules work well - just make sure the heels are high enough to offset the effect of the anklegrazing trouser length.

And with your extra-luxe evening look? Only a pair of ankle-strap stilettos will do.
