Players ditch clubs GOLF clubs [...].

Players ditch clubs GOLF clubs across the nation found themselves deserted this weekend as fans ditched playing the sport to watch the professionals at the Celtic Manor resort.

Clubs in Newport say they had been hoping for a busier weekend as golf fever hit the area, but instead found themselves having a quiet weekend as players stayed at home to watch the Ryder Cup.

Lee Fox, manager of Caerleon Golf Club, yesterday said:"We are expecting to be quieter thisweekend. So far it has been very quiet, and I don't think it will get much busier.

"Aswewere so close to Celtic Manorwewere hoping thatwewould see more golfers coming out to play, but that doesn't seem to be the case."

Steve Price, the golf pro at Llanwern Golf Club, said he expected the course to remain fairly empty for the duration of the tournament.

He said: "It seems like it's going to be pretty quiet here, and I would have thought it will stay like this across the whole weekend."
