Plastic menace.

That LuLu Hypermarkets will get rid of plastic bags to protect environment is a great news. (GDN, August 28).

With the malls mushrooming in Bahrain, I'm sure this will encourage all ofthem to follow suit.

Though a plastic bag is an icon of the convenience culture, it is probably the most omni-present consumer item on the planet, numbering in trillions. That is why the menace of plastic bags is of a gigantic proportion.

A research states that it takes 1,000 years for plastic bags to decompose on

land and 450 years in water. And more than 100,000 marine animals die

every day of plastic litter floating on the ocean.

What makes it such a malady is that only 1 per cent of plastic bags is getting recycled worldwide. The balance 99pc can live for ages.!

Moreover, plastic is not biodegradable. So, unless they've

been incinerated, each and every plastic bag you've ever used in your life, will continue to live for centuries after your death.

That's why plastic can pose catastrophical effects on our environment.

Therefore, I salute LuLu's pragmatic decision. Because we do not inherit earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.

Let us not kill good trees to put out bad newspapers..! Each one of us has a role to play. Because we are not passengers in this spaceship - earth, all of us are crew members..!
