Plants that merit attention, volume 1.

Cultivated plants, like their cousins in the wild, can become endangered. They fall victim to changing fashion or the economic laws that make mass production of a few plants more profitable than limited production of a wide variety.

The Garden Club of America, recognizing the seriousness of this problem, decided that its Horticultural Committee would publicize worthy but overlooked plants through a series of volumes. The first, Plants that Merit Attention, Volume I--Trees, edited by Janet M. Poor (Timber Press, Box 1631, Beaverton, Ore. 97075, 1984; $44.95), is an attractive 352-page guide available in bookstores or from the publisher (add $2 for shipping).

Each of the 143 entries includes a full-length color portrait and close-ups of details, as well as a complete description consisting of comments on appearance, growth, care, use propagation, and landscape value. Four examples suggest the range of trees spotlighted: Acer griseum, the paperbark maple; Cladrastis lutea, yellow wood; Magnolia acuminata, cucumber tree; and Parrotia persica.

An unusual--and useful--feature lists parks and public gardens where each tree may be seen. Appendixes provide addresses of these places, and an index tells which nurseries sell the trees.

There is even an application form for nurserymen to use if they want to list their firms as sources in a forthcoming supplement.
