Plans for new tower block toned down - but Tramshed still 'at risk'.

NEW plans for a tower block overlooking Cardiff's Tramshed have been toned down - but the future of the music venue still hangs in the balance.

Proposals for a seven-storey tower block of offices and apartments on vacant land right next to the Grangetown venue have been scaled down by the developer following concerns.

DS Developments now wants to build a four storey development - with which 3,000 sq ft of business space and 16 serviced apartments.

The operators of the Tramshed say the development could still put the future of the venue at risk.

Concerns had been raised that tour buses and taxis currently use the land for parking, and on the impact of the building work on the Tramshed's day trade - which the operators say have not been allayed by the new plans.

But DS Developments - landlord of the Tramshed site - say the new building would not affect the operation of the venue and said "it will survive".

It is also understood the Tramshed's operator have been in discussions with up to two international brands to take over the running of the venue - and neither are concerned about the parking issues.

DS Developments is also seeking assurances from MJR Events that they can continue running the Tramshed following the abrupt closure of another of its venues - The Assembly in Leamington Spa - this month.

But Dan Ickowitz-Seidler, co-owner of The Tramshed, said: "We have not had any further contact with the developer or Cardiff council since our initial objection. It disappoints us the issues we raised have not been addressed by the revised proposals.

"While we welcome a smaller building outlined in the new plans, the fundamental problem of how Tramshed trades during the build process have still not been addressed and subsequently this development will still put Tramshed at risk. We need to fight for Cardiff to save Tramshed so it can continue to serve the community and remain the city's best live music and events space."

"We will help the operators as much as we can with our contacts in Cardiff council to look at alternate arrangements. It will make no difference whatsoever to the Tramshed.

"Following the closure of the venue in Leamington Spa, we're looking for rapid assurances from them.

"We're committed to keeping the Tramshed there whatever happens. It will survive."
