Miguel Cabrera won his third consecutive American League batting title last season, and I also noticed he finished second for a league batting title two times--once with thella Florida Marlins in 2006 and once with the Detroit Tigers in 2010.
My question is, what batters finished second in the batting championship race the most?
Since 1901, when the American League was formed, 41 different batters have finished second in a batting race multiple times. Hall of Famer Sam Crawford has the most with four second-place finishes--three in the American League with the Tigers (1903, 190Z 1908) and one in the N.L. with the Reds (1902).
Players who finished second three times include Al Kaline, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Eddie Collins and Joe Jackson in the A.L. Todd Helton, Willie Mays, Bill Terry and Rogers Hornsby had three second-place finishes in the N.L.
