Pitch punch thug appeal thrown out.

A FOOTBALLER who smashed an opponent's jaw with a punch has lost his appeal against a 25-month jail sentence.

Counsel for Scott McQuillan, 24, told two judges that victim Craig Logan had raised tensions in the game by committing a bad tackle.

But Lady Paton, who heard the appeal with Lord Wheatley, said: "No tackle in a football match can justify such an attack."

She said McQuillan, of Greenock, had committed "a vicious assault" which left Craig needing to have metal plates inserted in his jaw.

McQuillan attacked Craig in February and was jailed in August. He has other assault convictions, but his lawyer said they dated back to when he was 15 or 16 and he had turned his life around.
