Pirates star Kaya I used to be bullied.

Actress Kaya Scodelario has revealed she was once a tormented schoolgirl wracked by anxiety.

The confident 25-year-old has won praise for playing Johnny Depp's new leading lady in the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film.

But Kaya, who got her acting break in TV drama Skins, said: "I was incredibly insecure as a child. I was bullied to the point of having to change schools."

That changed when Kaya, who was raised by her Brazilian single mother in a council flat in London, tried her hand at public speaking.

She recalled: "The first time I stood up in class in front of everyone, I loved it - embodying a character so different to myself. I've been fortunate enough to make a career out of it."
