TELECOMWORLDWIRE-5 September 2006-Pipex Wireless to deploy trial WiMAX network in Milton Keynes(C)1994-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com
A trial WiMAX network is to be deployed in Milton Keynes in the UK by Pipex Wireless, a Pipex Communications plc and Intel Corporation joint venture.
Pipex Wireless has worked with Milton Keynes Council to design and plan the trial, which is due to begin in December, running for six months, and will be extended to provide wider coverage across Milton Keynes if successful.
The WiMAX product propositions will be evaluated for business and residential customers through trial base stations placed in areas of the town, providing coverage in areas where DSL broadband is limited or unavailable.
Airspan Networks, a wireless solutions provider, will provide base station equipment and subscriber terminals, while the radio network and roof-top infrastructure will be constructed and operated by Ericsson.
Pipex Wireless will deploy five HiperMAX-Micro base stations from Airspan Networks to begin with, providing services using indoor and outdoor subscriber terminals, with integrated WiFi available. It will offer the trial to around 500 users initially, providing connection speeds of 2Mb/s to 10Mb/s.
