Phone spy in tanning booth.

A PEEPING Tom has admitted using a mobile phone to spy on a woman using a tanning booth.

Ben Joseph Kushnirenko, 23, pleaded guilty at Teesside Magistrates' Court to a single charge of attempting to observe the woman without her consent.

The court heard how the victim had gone to a Stockton tanning salon on October 15 last year and while in a cubicle in a state of undress noticed a black object above a partition. She then realised it was a mobile phone and told a receptionist who called the police, said prosecutor Guy Prest.

"The male in the adjoining cubicle was subsequently arrested," said Mr Prest. "He was frank in interview and admitted using the phone to see the naked female."

However, Kushnirenko, of Gunnerside Road, Stockton, denied recording the woman, saying he was using the phone as a lens. Mr Prest compared it to situations where voyeurs use mirrors to see under changing room cubicles.

In a very short statement read out in court, the victim said simply: "I feel completely shocked and humiliated by this matter."

Mr Prest added: "That remains her feeling to this day. It has left something of an impression on her."

The prosecutor said sentencing guidelines stated the starting point for Kushnirenko's punishment was a low-level community order.

When the defendant, who represented himself in court, was asked if he wanted to say anything in his defence, he simply said "no".

The magistrates adjourned the case until Friday, February 1 for sentencing. Kushnirenko was given unconditional bail and told to co-operate with the probation service for a pre-sentence report.
