Phoenix rises to firefighting applications.

New Phoenix truck from Oshkosh engineered for extreme off-road firefighting; eight-wheel drive design based on HEMTT

Oshkosh Truck Corp. has introduced a new eight-wheel drive firefighting vehicle designed for use in extreme off-road conditions. The new Phoenix truck is an all-new firefighting truck design based on the company's Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) that has been supplied to the U.S. military as an off-road transporter for more than 12 years.

"A major use of the truck will be to fight fires in areas not accessible to regular firefighting trucks that depend on paved well-maintained roads," according to Don Veroff, director of commercial engineering and new product development for Oshkosh Truck Corp. "Other uses of the Phoenix could include getting into remote communities or lodges for application of preventative fire retardants such as foam."

The all-wheel drive Phoenix is designed to climb and traverse steep inclines and other off-road obstacles, yet maintain a maximum road travel speed of 55 mph. With a full tank of water the truck is capable of climbing a 60 percent grade with an angle of approach of 43 [degrees], as well as ford bodies of water 4 ft. deep, according to the company. A skid plate and brush guard are features designed to help the truck go through low obstacles such as low-lying bushes.

The Phoenix is powered by a 12 L Detroit Diesel 8V-92TA diesel engine rated 445 hp at 2100 rpm. The engine is equipped with a Jacobs engine brake and a dry-type two-stage air filter with precleaner. The fuel system includes a 100 gal. capacity tank and a Racor fuel/water separator. The engine drives a five-speed Allison HT-740 automatic transmission with a water-to-oil transmission oil cooler.

The transmission drives an Oshkosh model 55000 two-speed transfer case with ratios of 0.98:1 and 2.66:1 and an air-operated front tandem axle disconnect. The Oshkosh designed and patented independent suspension system includes 16 in. of total wheel travel. The front steer and rear drive axles, manufactured by Oshkosh, have a 16,000 lb. capacity and are equipped with planetary wheel end reduction and inter- and intra-axle differential locks. Steering is through a Sheppard hydraulic steering system, with integral power assist.

Braking for the 62,000 lb. vehicle is through an air operated split system featuring Duplex wedge drum brakes with automatic adjustment in front and Simplex wedge drum units in the rear.

The frame is a heat-treated carbon manganese steel-formed channel unit. The electrical system includes a 65 amp alternator and a 24 V starting and lighting system, a 12 V starting and lighting system is also available.

The two-man cab features tubular steel frame construction covered with a corrosion-resistant outer skin. Instrumentation from Datcon includes a tachometer/hourmeter, speedometer/odometer, voltage meter, air pressure gauge, fuel level gauge, oil pressure and water temperature gauges.

The design of the Phoenix truck makes it well suited for wildland firefighting or as a supplemental aircraft firefighting vehicle, able to negotiate difficult off-runway areas. Initially designed as a transporter, the truck can carry at least 2500 gal. of water - about 10 tons. With the optional auto compressed air foam system (CAFS) from W.S. Darley Co., the fire suppression capability is increased by a factor of approximately seven, according to Oshkosh. The foam system includes two 35 gal. foam tanks for use with class A and aqueous film-forming foam.

Water and other fire fighting agents are applied by two turrets - one mounted on the front bumper, the other on the roof of the cab. The two turrets operating together are capable of applying as much as 595 gpm. Hand-held lines on hose reels are mounted on both sides of the truck. Three nozzles mounted under the truck are designed to protect the truck itself from fire.

The CAFS unit is powered by a Cummins 4BTA3.9 diesel rated 116 hp at 2500 rpm, which powers a Darley KHM500 centrifugal water pump. That engine also drives a Bauer B150 rotary screw air compressor rated 225 cfm at 125 rpm.
