Phoenix adds to Belgian beer portfolio.

Phoenix Imports announced the addition of two Belgian specialty ales, Gouden Carolus and Dentergems, to its beer portfolio.

"We're very pleased to have been selected as importer for these singular beers," reported George Saxton, Phoenix president. "Belgium has long been known as a beer paradise, and these beers are classic examples of why that is so."

Named for the golden coinage of the Holy Roman Emperors Charlemagne and Charles V, Gouden Carolus has been brewed at Mechelen since at least 1369, Saxton said. Chronicles at Mechelen, at that time the capital of the Austrian Netherlands, indicate this strong brown ale was popular with royalty, especially during fox hunts because "it fired both rider and steed with such enthusiasm for galloping that the hunt took place in the best possible atmosphere."

Today, brewed by Brasserie Gouden Carolus, the bottle-conditioned brew is described by Michael Jackson as "very deep copper-brown, burgundy color... creamy in texture... rich and complex in palate... a gentle, soothing character... and a hint of fruitiness in the finish. A lovely after-dinner beer; or, better still, a nightcap."

Riva of Dentergem, Belgium, is one of only a handful of Belgian brewers still producing a white (wheat) beer, according to Saxton. The naturally-cloudy ale, more in the full-bodied southern German style than Berliner Weisse, is a fine accompaniment to fish, fowl and seafood.

Both brands will be available in 11.15-oz. bottles in selected markets beginning next month. Phoenix plans to expand distribution of the brands to virtually all of its current markets by the end of the year.
