Philips Gives Mobile Multimedia a Boost With Its Nexperia Cellular System Solution; a Complete Cellular System to Support Emerging Mobile Multimedia Applications.

Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG, AEX:PHI) today announced the Nexperia(TM) Cellular System Solution. Based on Philips' successful Nexperia multimedia baseband, this complete cellular system is designed to enable handset manufacturers to deliver affordable multimedia handsets to end-users. They also benefit from accelerated time to market for new products and reduced risk due to the proven, ready-to-use format. Its flexibility allows manufacturers to focus on differentiation and provides a cost-effective method of quickly including the latest multimedia functionality to adapt to market demands.

Built around the Philips Nexperia multimedia baseband (PCF5213), which comprises the RF front-end, power management unit and software package, this latest generation of Philips' market leading Nexperia Cellular System Solution offers quad-band capabilities, supporting GSM at 850/900/1800/1900 MHz to enable worldwide roaming. It also features a GPRS protocol stack which has been fully validated by IOT (Inter-Operability Tests) and customers in addition to EDGE to provide handset and module manufacturers with enhanced data rates of up to 300 kbps to support the latest multimedia applications.

The Nexperia Cellular System Solution provides handset manufacturers with a portfolio of integrated hardware and software solutions for mobile-based multimedia applications such as MMS, Java-based gaming, MP3, Video-MPEG4 and MPEG4 encoding, email, FM Synthesis for melody generation, speech recognition, PC Connectivity and USB. Optional features include FM Radio, Bluetooth and Color LCD. Furthermore, customers also benefit from access to extensive software protocol stack and IP libraries, which enable ongoing software upgrades to support emerging applications.

To address specific market requirements, the Nexperia Cellular System Solution also supports AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) technology in addition to single antenna interference cancellation (SAIC) to increase network capacity and improve service quality for cellular subscribers. It also features E-OTD (Enhanced Observed Time Difference) -- the ETSI's standard for location technology to meet the E-911 requirement and TeleTYpe (TTY) allowing automatic voice to data translation. The solution contains fully validated hardware and software, and dedicated worldwide regional support for Full Type Approval (FTA) and industrialization phases are also provided.

Pricing and Availability

The Nexperia Cellular System Solution is expected to be available by Q3 2003 with mass production starting in late 2003. The full chipset, comprising the Nexperia Multimedia Baseband PCF5213, RF UAA3537, PA BGY284E and PMU PCF50603 and software package, is priced at US$21 for order quantities of over 100 thousand units.
