State-of-the-Art Biometrics Facility in Eindhoven,

The Netherlands Comes Online

Philips Flat Display Systems (FDS), one of the world's largest suppliers of active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs), today announced that its new biometrics manufacturing facility, located in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, has begun volume production of a fingerprint recognition sensor that provides unparalleled convenience and security for today's mobile computing users. This unique biometric-based security solution is the result of a joint development partnership with leading fingerprint authentication technologies and solutions provider Who?Vision Systems, Inc.

The production of this fingerprint recognition sensor at the Eindhoven facility couples Philips FDS' flat displays with Who?Vision's patented TactileSense(TM) technology to create a thin, extremely compact sensor that is no larger than a postage stamp and less than 1/8-inch thick.

The first application for the sensor currently being produced at Philips FDS' facility will be integrated within Who?Vision's e-thenticator(TM) MS 3000 PC Card , which is a standard Type II PC (PCMCIA) card. The e-thenticator MS 3000 PC Card will revolutionize the world of mobile computing by providing ultimate security and convenience to corporations and end-users.

According to Doug Antone, CEO of Who?Vision, the company has created a convenient and secure way to protect digital data and control access to digital networks, while also eliminating the burden of passwords and pins. "Who?Vision's revolutionary TactileSense technology, combined with Philips flat panel display technology, enables us to offer a unique fingerprint sensor-based solution to our customers. Our newest product, the e-thenticator(TM) MS 3000 PC Card, is just one example of how Who?Vision and Philips FDS are combining the best technology and state-of-the-art manufacturing strengths to offer ultimate security and convenience for any network connected device."

Who?Vision's ongoing partnership with Philips FDS opens many doors. "We are pleased to be in the prime position to offer Who?Vision's technology and expertise to a variety of Philips' consumer electronics and components customers around the world," said Antone.

David Hadani, general manager for Philips FDS' Display/Human Interface program, noted, "Philips FDS' new fingerprint sensor is testament to the company's commitment to deliver increased functionality to the display surface and provide greater value to the end user. By working closely with cutting-edge technology partners such as Who?Vision, we are able to combine our core competencies to produce `best of breed' display technology that will revolutionize tomorrow's digital devices -- ultimately enhancing the way we work and play." Hadani continued, "Furthermore, this signals Philips FDS' continuous efforts to be at the forefront of flat panel display innovation and utilization through an extensive portfolio of breakthrough and enabling display-centric technology solutions."

The fingerprint recognition sensor developed by Philips FDS and Who?Vision is unique in comparison to other solutions such as optical and silicon chip-based technologies. Traditional systems have difficulty with various skin types, are susceptible to fraud, have problems with mechanical pressure, fluid contamination and electrostatic discharge (ESD), and are more costly. The fingerprint identification system contains Who?Vision's TactileSense. Without the need for a light source, the TactileSense polymer generates an image of the fingerprint patterns, identifying the unique characteristics that link it to an individual.

The Eindhoven manufacturing facility producing the fingerprint sensors has been in operation since 1987. Recently revamped to accommodate the production of this biometric solution, the facility also produces static detector X-ray sensor plates. The facility features over 2000 square meters of cleanroom space and a Class 100 process area. The facility is located in Eindhoven -- thereby allowing quick and easy access to the full breath of Philips' technology and corporate resources as well as a highly skilled workforce.

Philips FDS will be showcasing this new biometrics sensor, along with other display-centric innovations during the Society for Information Display symposium (SID 2000), held at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in Long Beach, Calif., from May 16 through May 18, 2000. If you are interested in meeting with Philips FDS at SID, please contact Marie Labrie via email:, or phone: 650/968-8900, ext.119, or visit Philips FDS at booth No. 421.
