Philippines : Tree planting kicks off mining confab.

More than 100 trees will be planted by mining stakeholders and students to kick off the 62nd National Mine Safety Environment conference in the City from November 17 to 20.Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) President Louie Sarmiento said that the tree planting shall be done at PSEA- adopted portion of the Botanical Garden.

Sarmiento said that the adoption of the park is the group s contribution to the city of Baguio which has been hosting the PMSEA and the annual mining conference in the past 62 years. The yearly tree planting and tending of the trees at the PMSEA park is their commitment to help maintain the natural resources of the Botanical Garden which is also a tourist destination.

In 2012, the PMSEA adopted 5,000 square meters at Botanical Garden which it developed and turned into a real botanical garden with rich endemic plant and tree varieties. Among the tree species planted were Diospyros Philippinensis or kamagong, Dillenia Grandifolia or katmon tree, Podocarpus or maki tree and Eugenia species and other species which were recommended by foresters.

Meanwhile, the PMSEA with the city government of Baguio thru the City Environment and Parks Management Office will sponsor A simple program to usher the Christmas season on November 16, Monday at around 7:00PM at the Malcolm Square Peoples Park. Saint Louis University Glee Club serenade visitors and guests. The activity will be highlighted by the bathing of the Norfolk Pine Tree at foot of Session Road by the CEPMO and the Baguio Fire Department. This is the fifth year that PMSEA is conducting this rejuvenation activity for the Norfolk Pine Tree which has served as the city s Christmas tree for a long time.

Local environmentalists noticed the deterioration of the tree after the 2011 Yuletide Season with its leaves turning yellow and it looked dirty due to the smoke and smog. The PSEA removed all scales, soot and dead twigs of the surviving Norfolk pine tree in the hope to revive the more than century old tree, and it has since been bathing the tree during the annual mining confab.
