Philippines : POs, CBFM holders attend NGP Congress.

Members of the 64 People s Organizations (POs) and Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) holders are joining the nationwide National Greening Program Congress in Manila.

They will be sharing testimonials and commitment of support with all the other POs in the country for the NGP.

This is an important event as we will be able to share the same road map and direction with all the other NGP stakeholders, said DENR-6 Director Jim Sampulna, who will also be participating in the congress.

The CBFM-NGP Congress on October 29 and 29, is expected to gather some 2,000 members of the POs, civil society organizations, non-government organizations, acadme, private sectors and key officials of the DENR.

The congress will showcase the good practices and accomplishments of the CBFM-NGP, highlighting the great contribution of the POs, according to Sampulna.

The DENR reported that the NGP has already reforested 1.5 million hectares to date, with 80-90 per cent seedling survival rate nationwide.

The POs will present their good practices, highlighting the social, economic and environmental impact of the NGP, citing lessons learned and some recommendations.

Some personal accounts of the POs will show the continuous improvements in the lives of their members through livelihood opportunities.

Further, others will show how their incomes from the CBFM-NGP initiatives have been used to engage in other income-generating projects, such as livestock raising, sari-sari stores and others.

Among the major outputs of the congress will be the charting of a roadmap for the national CBFM-NGP network and the launching of the Partnership on Credit Facilities for the CBFM, between the DENR and the Land Bank of the Philippines.

Some aspects of ASEAN Cooperation and El NiEo Mitigation will also be important part of the sessions.

The CBFM as a national strategy with communities as managers of forest resources, is used by the DENR to ensure sustainable development of forestlands in the country.
